In the 1960s, East Germany's JBG-37 squadron operated the MiG-17F, locally designated for evaluation and training purposes. Equipped with UB-16-57 rocket pods, the MiG-17F gained a formidable ground-attack capability, firing 57mm rockets in high-volume salvos against armored vehicles, troop concentrations, and fortifications. The aircraft retained its original twin 23mm cannons for air-to-air combat, making it a versatile multirole platform. JBG-37 pilots trained extensively in both interception and close air support tactics, integrating the UB-16-57's firepower with classic MiG-17 maneuverability. This combination allowed the squadron to maintain readiness in a rapidly evolving Cold War environment, bridging air defense and tactical strike roles effectively.
